Every image file is a deal between three things: how good it looks, how small it is, and how widely it opens. No single format wins all three, which is the entire reason converters exist.
PNG is lossless, meaning it stores every pixel exactly. That makes it perfect for screenshots, logos, line art and anything with sharp edges or text — and it is the only common format that supports a transparent background. The catch is size: a photo saved as PNG can be many times larger than the same photo as a JPG.
JPG (JPEG) is lossy. It throws away detail your eye barely notices to make files dramatically smaller, which is why it has been the default for photographs for decades.
